TMS October Online Faculty Meeting

Here’s a quick intro to the online faculty meeting (purpose, rationale, and even a cameo appearance from a Jackson pet…):

Now let’s hear from Scott Timms as he shares some reminders about how we use Minor Infractions:

Next our awesome counselors have provided some required and very important training regarding Child Protective Services:

Have you seen the revised KISD Employee Handbook yet? You need to check it out! Employee Handbook 17-18  Here is a message from Human Resources regarding the handbook:

The new 2017-2018 Employee Handbook is here! The purpose of the handbook is to provide you with information that will pave the way for a successful year. The handbook is a guide to and a brief explanation of district policies and procedures related to employment.

Employees have the option of receiving the handbook in electronic format or hard copy, therefore it is provided in electronic format unless otherwise requested. The handbook may be accessed on K-Connect under the Workforce-Human Resources Department tab. A hard copy of the handbook may be obtained through your campus or department.

Each employee has acknowledged receipt of the handbook upon hire. Employees will be notified of future significant changes in policies and procedures through normal communication channels, such as campus/department staff meetings and District Wide Wednesday.

For more information, employees may refer to the policy codes that are associated with handbook topics, confer with their supervisor, or call the appropriate district office. A policy manual is located in the Superintendent’s office and is available for employee review during normal working hours, or on the District’s website, http://www.kellerisd.net under Board of Trustees and on K-Connect.

Please remember that policies and procedures can change at any time. It is your responsibility to read and comply with revisions made to the handbook throughout your employment.
It is the expectation and the responsibility of each employee to read the Employee Handbook in its entirety. Some updated topics that are of special interest to employees in this year’s handbook are:
• Updates to Probationary Contracts and Work Schedules to reflect District of Innovation exemptions
• Revisions to Electronic Communications between Employees and Students to include provisions of SB 7 that prohibits improper relationships between educators and students
• Revisions to Possession of Firearms and Weapons to include updates from SB 1566
Please contact your supervisor or the Human Resources office if you have questions, concerns or need further explanation.

Finally, let’s wrap it up with the Encouragement segment. Today’s topic: Anti-Bullying Month and our school/community-wide efforts to increase kindness and empathy! Notice how much our students have done to lead this effort! Love seeing students lead!

Thank you for participating! TMS staff, remember that the way you mark your attendance is to provide your “Exit Ticket” by commenting below with any takeaways you  would like to share from this month’s faculty meeting. What did you hear that was valuable to you? What questions do you have?

  1. There are a couple of things. I really love The “chill out” area that the counselors office has. It has really helped a few of my kids this year! Well done! Also, I really love be the fact that we brought back the triplicate forms on the minor infraction, and added a “fix it form” to it. It is especially useful in 5th grade! We also utilize agendas, so we go through many steps before we ever have to get to a DR. It’s a great tool that helps with classroom management.

  2. I also enjoy this format for faculty meetings, the chill out area, and reminders on the power of building relationships. For some reason, my mind drifted a bit once it turned to loving kids and it made me think of how I ended up in this job in the first place… “Champion: an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.” by Rita F. Pierson

Remember we are all champions to some pretty amazing kids, some in hard situations. So here and now I must give a public shout out to the champions of my educational experience who instilled a passion for learning in me. If you really want to know the power of your job, read on. To my champions, wherever you are, thank you.
5th grade – Mrs. Peoples (Twin Lakes Elementary) – Thank you for eating carrots with the tall, chubby girl who felt ugly, dumb, and completely insignificant around the little, tiny girls. I’m still tall and chubby but I never eat a carrot that I don’t think of you and like myself anyway.
6th grade geography – Mr. Gillette (R.O. Gibson Jr. High) – I still remember the day you stood on the desk to teach me latitude and longitude as an attention grabber! (Shhhh…. Don’t tell my principal that I stand on a chair and do it the same way.)
7th grade social studies – Mrs. White (R.O. Gibson Jr. High) – I loved dressing up to give my presentation on the Parthenon and really feeling like I earned the A. Projects became a passion of mine after that.
7th and 9th grade science – Mr. Appel (R.O. Gibson Jr. High) – The day you chewed me out for whining about your class being too hard… was EXACTLY what I needed. I still quote you, “Grades are not a measure of your intelligence, it is a measure of your work ethic.” And for the record, I graduated at the top of my class because I was determined to never let you down again. I also thought your comb-over rocked! 😉
Mr. Delgado – Jr High Band Instructor – You played the trumpet beautifully, even though your hands shook with Parkinson’s disease. It inspired me and is still a picture of peace among the storm.
Coach Phillips (Western HS)- Took me as a shy freshman and added me to the Varsity, state championship team, and hugged me as I watched my dad die of stomach cancer my freshman year. I was a broken vessel watching that, but you gave me a positive release. Thanks for the softball you had the whole team sign. Pretty awesome and I still have it.
HS History Teacher, Student Council Advisor, Softball coach, and Stand-in Dad, Dan Phillips (Cheyenne HS) – Remember that day you told me not to let Danny distract me from the full ride scholarship and told him he better not stand in my way? Well, I listened, but I must confess, we have been married for almost 23 years now. 😉
Marshall Darnell… Mrs. Anderson… Dr. Brown… Champions. Every. Single. One.

Teach on my friends, teach on, and love it… even through minor infractions forms, restorative justice discussions, staff meetings, bullying summits, mountains of papers to grade, trainings…. find your inner champion and enjoy the journey!

    1. Brandi,

You are an awesome teacher! You are passionate about teaching and work so hard to make each day special for your students. Keep up all the good work. When I grow up to be a teacher I will try to be like you.

  3. I was not aware of the 10 minute chill out area. This could be useful for some of the kids I see in class. I like the changes to the minor infractions form where students need to self reflect. It does provide a great record of what you have attempted with a student before a DR is written.

  4. I like the clarification on the counselor’s office utilization. The new 10 min cool off time is great. Also, the kindness movement on our campus has been great. i seems like every really hard day there is a note, a kind word, or a act of kindness that picks me back up. This year has had its challenges, but because of all of you and the kids it has been a really special year.

  5. I appreciate the information from the counselor’s and love the cool off area. I’ve been by and seen a couple of kiddos already taking advantage of that. I really like the idea of making the students do their reflections before deciding on a consequence with the minor infractions. I also want to say that I’ve received several notes of encouragement from students already this year. I know I tell the kiddos how much I appreciate those little things, but I’m not sure they truly understand how much it brightens my day!

  6. Not only is the online format more conducive for teacher’s busy work/life schedules, it is also helpful to refer back to information if needing clarification at a later time. Thanks for the information on PBIS, and the counseling dept. details.

    1. Agreed! It’s so helpful to get the information at a time that suits us during the given time frame. I also feel like it increases engagement and retention. The kindness movement on campus is evident- tons of kids talking about this wonder book around me in positive ways. It’s good to remind the community of the abundance of kindness we see on a day to day basis.

  10. LOVE this format for faculty meetings. I like that if I come up with a question later about a topic that was discussed I can always go back and read/watch it again. I’m also excited about the chill out space for our students. I know some kids are really going to benefit from being able to take a few minutes to regroup in a calm space.

  11. The online faculty meetings definitely help with before and after school schedules around campus. It almost makes it easier to keep track of what the meeting is coving.
Restorative Justice sounds interesting. It will be neat to see any results in the future after getting it started.

  12. I like the 10 minute chill area as well. I think teachers sometimes need a 10 minute chill before deciding on discipline as when we emotionally dole out consequences we aren’t always thinking of the best way to fix the behavior but rather punish it.

I’d like to thank the counselors because they’ve given me plenty of “chill” out moments for myself as well.

  19. This is great stuff! I really liked the part about meaningful assignments; It puts the responsibility on the teacher to select assignments that show merit and are capable of measuring student learning and progress within the content area.
